It's a brand new year, which can only mean one thing: MORE TRAVELING! I decided to kick off 2018 by traveling to the music capital of the world - AUSTIN, TEXAS! Austin is one of the most creative, unique, and art-centric cities in the world. With art on practically every corner, hundreds of live music venues, and some good old fashioned Texas BBQ, this city was at the top of my list when it comes to a weekend getaway! I'll be brutally honest, my first impression of the city wasn't the greatest. My friend and I had just spent the entire afternoon driving from Dallas, so we were already pretty exhausted and running on fumes. Instead of going all out and 'getting weird' (so they say) on a Friday night, we opted for a more quite night and stayed in for some wine and relaxation. The next morning, bright and early, we ventured out onto Congress street and explored the famous Jo's coffee area. I know that they have the saying 'keep Austin weird,' but...wow, people were definitely weird, and not so friendly. It seemed like everywhere we went that day, we encountered more and more rudeness. I was actually pretty surprised, considering the whole 'Texas Charm' notion. But I wasn't going to let a few rude behaviors ruin my Austin experience, because that just wouldn't be fair. And thankfully, it didn't, because despite the minor set backs from that day, the rest of our time in the city was rather enjoyable, entertaining, and overall a lot of fun! Whether you're just looking for a wild and crazy night out on 6th street, shopping for some stylish clothes, or looking to eat your way through the city, Austin is the place for all types of travelers to roam free and explore. Below I will provide my top tips for making the most of your trip to Austin. I will also include the costs, location, and hours of each place visited. ACCOMODATION Personally, we were lucky enough to be able to stay with a friend during our time in Austin, so searching for accommodation didn't really apply. However, I will give recommendations on a few places to consider staying, depending on your budget.
WHERE TO EAT Go big or go home, right?! When it comes to choosing where to eat in Austin, it's so tough to pick just one place! Every street you walk down and corner you turn there are endless varieties of cafes, food trucks, and restaurants. But, it wouldn't be a trip to Austin if you didn't indulge in some good old southern style Texas BBQ, or grab a coffee from Jo's after taking a photo in front of the 'I love you so much' sign. Although I only spent a quick two days in Austin, I can assure you, my palate went home satisfied! Below I will provide a few recommendations for places to eat, drink, and leave happy :)
WHAT TO DO / PLACES TO VISIT One of the things I was most excited about, besides the amazing night life, was exploring all the eccentric and local shops in Austin. Congress Street has an amazing selection of boutiques and local vendors selling artwork and jewelry. On Saturday, after church, they have a bunch of vendors set up outside selling handmade crafts, soaps, jewelry, and other items. A few shops worth visiting are Maya, Allan's Boots, Uncommon Objects, and Prima Dora. Then if you head to 6th street, you will find a wide range of pubs that offer all types of live music after 8:00 p.m., along with a variety of happy hour specials. Whether you're looking for some two-step country club, arcade games, or some live music, I can assure you that Austin has it! Below I will provide some recommendations for nightlife, activities, and shopping.
As you can see, there is a plethora of things to do while visiting Austin! I only had two days to explore this awesome city, which wasn't really enough. I also wanted to mention, if you happen to drive from Dallas to Austin, there is a 'must-see' stop along the way - "BUC-EE'S!" If you haven't come across this gem of a place during your travels, I suggest you make a pit stop and check it out! Buc-ees is not only a great road trip destination, but it is also the world's largest gas station. Once inside, you will find an array of items such as food, clothing, souvenirs, drinks, and did I mention FOOD?! Whether you're in the mood for some good old fashioned BBQ sandwich, beef jerky, ice cream, fudge, candy, and so much more, you won't want to miss this amazing stop!
