Arriving into Naples was unlike any other place I have visited in Italy. Although the taxi ride from the airport was a short 20 minute ride into the city center, I was definitely taken by surprise at what I witnessed during that drive. If you've ever been to Venice, or Florence, or even Rome, then you know how ancient and beautiful the cities look upon arrival. I'm not trying to belittle the city of Naples in any way, it was just something I was not expecting. While driving into the city, it felt more or less like driving into the roughest parts of Los Angeles, (aka: a third world country) where every wall was filled with graffiti, and there was an abundance of garbage and broken down buildings amidst all of the houses and streets. I have never experienced the feeling of being 'unsafe' while traveling throughout Italy, up until this point. There’s a saying that Rome is the heart of Italy, but Naples is its soul. Naples is gritty and chaotic, yet beautiful and authentic at the same time, in its own special way. Naples is one of the most poor and densely populated cities in all of Europe. To be honest, I developed more of a love / hate relationship with the city. All the stereotypes are alive and well in Naples. Neapolitans are always yelling, fiercely gesticulating. Everyone is sweating from the oppressive heat and humidity. But, don't let this discourage you from visiting, because you might be one to fall absolutely in love with the city. Below I will provide a brief outline on the highlights of Naples that I experienced including accommodation, places to eat, and places to visit. ACCOMMODATION IN naplesMONTEOLIVETO 33 Location: Via Monteoliveto, 33, 80134 Napoli NA, Italy Cost: 1 room with queen bed starts at $100 per night Hours: available on call basis Website: http://www.monteoliveto33.com TOP PLACES TO EAT IN NAPLESPizza. Of course, pizza. Eat it. Eat it all and don’t split it. Haha just kidding. Kind of...it’s almost like your obligation to Naples. Of course there are also other fantastic restaurants to indulge at, but pizza is always at the top of any list while visiting Italy. Either way, you can't go wrong with any meal, because I can promise you that it will never be terrible. TOP THINGS TO DO & SEE IN NAPLES*CASTEL DELL'OVO - Entrance to the top view point is free.
