Madrid, also known as the heart of Spain, is a vibrant city filled with endless tapas bars, sensory-overloading sights, an abundance of shopping, and a never ending nightlife. Like all big cities, its hard to know how to properly plan and organize your trip in order to ensure you are able to make the most out of the time allotted. It's safe to say that I took Madrid by storm, making it a point to explore all that the city had to offer. Because this was the last pit stop on my 'tour de España', and we had just spent two weeks of constant back and forth travel between hotels and every form of public transportation, I wasn't as inclined to go and run around the city as I had been prior to arriving. In this sense, the Madrid City Tour bus was an absolute life saver. If you are pressed for time, or just feeling a little more lethargic than usual, then this is hands down the best way to 'explore' the city in its entirety. Obviously its not the only option - there are also many 'walking tours' offered throughout the city that are free of charge. The two most popular tours are - Sandemans New Europe & Cat's Hostels Walking Tour. Both tours are free, however, tipping the guide is always welcome. Below I will provide a brief outline on the highlights of Madrid including accommodations, where to eat, and places to visit. ACCOMODATION IN madridCATALONIA GRAN VIA Location: Calle Gran Vía, 9, 28013 Madrid, Spain Cost: 1 room starts at about $200 per night Hours: 24/7 reception available Website: https://www.cataloniahotels.com TOP PLACES TO EAT IN madridWhen it comes to eating in Spain, it's no surprise that tapas are always voted numero uno on the food chain. However, after two weeks of non-stop tapas eating, my palette was craving a much wider variety. As I mentioned in my previous blog on Seville, I was again, super excited to discover how many eateries remain open throughout the entire day. This was most convenient when our bus arrived in the early afternoon and we were starving! So many places to eat, so little time... Below I will provide a list of some of the top rated eateries in Madrid (both from which I ate at and that come highly recommended from other people): - STEAKBURGER -SALA DE DESPIECE -OLIVIA TE CUIDA -FEDERAL CAFE -TRICICLO -CASA LUCAS -MERCADO DE SAN MIGUEL -TOMA CAFE -BICICLETA -JUICY AVENUE TOP THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN madrid*Indulge in the beauty of the Royal Palace of Madrid. *Walk around El Retiro Park. *Explore the fashion and art stores around the Plaza Mayor. *Wander around the charming streets of Gran Via. *Take in the fabulous architecture at Museo Nacional del Prado. *Visit the spectacular views of Temple of Debod. *Get lost in the bustling square of Puerta del Sol. *Walk around and enter the spectacular Catedral de la Almudena.
